Car of the Year 2008

Car of the Year 2008
The retro charm of the all new Fiat 500 conquered the hearts of the judges and won the coveted European Car of the Year Award 2008.

Running since 1963, the award carries a credible heritage (excluding the 2002 Fiat Stilo debacle) and has consistently identified the best-of-the-best in European manufacture.

However, while Fiat was the favourite and eventual champion, there were dissenting voices among some of the European judges at this year's event.

The Fiat 500 won on the basis of the interest it has aroused from the car buying public, who have been captivated by its intelligent and evocative design, along with its low prices.

But the car was not perfect. Others have called it dumpy and ugly and have criticised its ride over bumping British roads. There was also a lot to be said for the other vehicles in the competition.

The Mercedes has élan, alluding to a heritage and class which is beyond the toy-like Fiat. Even the humble Mondeo has a reputation for reliability, hard-won over the years, which is beyond that of the Fiat.
