Sales of new cars up across Europe
Sales of new cars across the European continent increased by some 5.6 per cent in October when compared with the same period last year.

This according to new data released by market analysts JATO today, and equates to an additional some 69,183 vehicles.

A total of 1,298,704 units were sold in October, bringing the total number of cars sold so far this year in Europe to 13,333,615 units.

"Overall, the relatively strong market performance of the last few months is helping to negate the effect of poor registration figures in the early part of the year," said Nasir Shah, global business director at JATO.

"The net result is that the market has remained fairly static compared to last year."

Volkswagen remains the biggest selling brand in Europe, according to the figures.

The German manufacturer saw sales increase 1.1 per cent during October, and the company has now sold 1,359,971 vehicles in the year to date.

The top four selling manufacturers behind Volkswagen were Opel/Vauxhall, Ford, Renault and Peugeot.

German premium brands saw some strong growth, with BMW seeing increases of 22.5 per cent in its market share during October.

"A number of BMW models have performed strongly,” said Mr Shah.

"The 1-Series, 3-Series, 5-Series and X5 have all done well, and have contributed to a 3.7 per cent increase in sales in the year to date. More recently, the introduction of the 1-series coupé and more efficient powertrains across the model range has further increased the brand’s appeal."

Finally, the most popular car in Europe during October was the Volkswagen Golf selling 40,370 units, up 20.9 per cent.
