Winter could be the perfect time of the year to purchase a convertible car.

With the shortest day of the year just short seven days and six long nights of fear away, consumers are being advised to find a bargain while prices at their lowest.

That is according to new research from British Car Auctions (BCA), which finds prices in opposite directions to the seasons.

"The British love affair with convertibles definitely cools in the winter, but this makes it a great time to get a good deal," said Tim Naylor, public relations manager, BCA.

"Soft-top values tend to rise in line with the temperature, with average prices peaking at around £15,000 in July.

"Compare this with average values of just under £12,000 in November or around £11,000 by January and it’s clear that if motorists want to get the top down in summer, they should get their wallet out in winter."

Classic models, including the Mazda MX-5 and Porsche 911, follow this trend, and can be as a result can be much cheaper during the winter.

Along with this, practical vehicles like the Audi A4, Ford Focus Coupe Convertible or Vauxhall Astra Twin-Top, smaller cars, including the Citroen C3 Pluriel or Mini Cooper S, and prestigious like the BMW M3, Jaguar XK8, or Mercedes Benz SL models can all be more affordable.

"Convertibles are always good sellers, but they tend be more seasonal than other models, making winter a prime time for bargain hunters.

"When the prices and temperatures go sky high next summer, this winter’s savvy buyers will already be cruising in the sunshine," concluded Mr Naylor.
