London is car-theft capital of Britain
Thursday, 03 Jul 2008 14:16
The Ford Fiesta is the car most likely to be stolen in London, it was revealed today
Ford Fiesta drivers living in London are most at risk from vehicle-related theft, according to an insurer.
Insurer swiftcover.com has compiled a list of the 'most likely' victims of car theft from its claims database and London came top, with Ford Fiesta owners apparently most at risk.
The Midlands came second, with the north-west and Yorkshire following. Good news if you live in Scotland and the Borders however, as swiftcover.com's figures showed that they were least likely to have their car or belongings stolen last year.
As for cars most likely to be stolen, Volkswagen Golf is at number two, followed by Vauxhall Astra, Vauxhall Corsa, and Nissan Micra.
If your car is stolen, the statistics are not too hopeful: 48 per cent of stolen cars are not recovered, and of those that are, 24.5 per cent are damaged.
Robin Reames, claims director of swiftcover.com, said: "Whether you live in a busy town, leafy suburbs or sleepy village, always keep your car secure even for just a few minutes.
"It's amazing how many people leave their keys in the ignition whilst de-frosting the car, or pop into the post office leaving their car windows open. It's just an open invitation to opportunistic thieves."
Swiftcover.com suggests investing in extra security for your car, like a wheel or steering lock and removing valuable items like sat navs when you leave your car to deter thieves.
