Drivers 'should be tested on energy efficiency'

Test learners on energy efficiency, CBI says
Learner drivers should be assessed on their energy-efficient driving skills, business organisation CBI has said.

It has called for energy-efficient driving to become a mandatory part of the practical test in a bid to cut transport emissions and help motorists save money.

The CBI's new report, Tackling Climate Change Closer to Home, claimed greener driving techniques could see drivers become £250 a year better off as they save on fuel.

"Making energy-efficient driving techniques a mandatory part of the test will make a significant contribution to changing the next generation of motorists' behaviour and to cutting transport emissions," commented Dr Neil Bentley, CBI director of business environment.

Drivers can improve fuel efficiency by changing gears more smoothly and avoiding sharp braking and accelerating.

They should also ensure they do not carry extra weight such as roof racks when they are not in use and keep tyres inflated to the correct pressure to reduce drag.
