Drivers 'clear the ice' with credit cards

Icy windscreens catch drivers unprepared
Credit cards, CD cases and hair dryers are just some of the unusual items that many drivers have been forced to use to clear their car windscreens of ice in the recent bad weather, according to a survey.

Nine in ten drivers interviewed as part of the Glass's Guide survey admitted that they have used an 'alternative' de-icing method.

Some of the stranger tools that have been used by motorists are old vehicle licence plates, the base of a computer model and even a shovel.

Nearly a quarter rely on their car's own heating system to melt snow and ice, while one in ten use a credit card or loyalty card. A similar number admit to using a house broom.

Commenting on the results of the survey, managing director of Glass's Andy Carroll said that the results are a cause for concern.

He said: "Many motorists seem to have been caught unprepared and it is worrying to hear how some have resorted to fairly desperate measures.

"Car owners should think carefully about the potential damage they could cause to their vehicles by cutting corners or using extreme methods when getting ready for the road."

Snow and ice have caused havoc on Britain's roads since Christmas, with motoring and safety groups warning about the dangers of driving in the snow, particularly without the correct equipment.

Last week, the Freight Transport Association called for greater investment in road infrastructure and a more intelligent approach to speed limits to improve safety on the UK's roads.
