New Audi A3 emphasizes efficiency

The new A3 range promises much, but will it deliver?
Audi has promised the enhancements it has included on the A3's 2009 range will deliver new levels of efficiency and significantly reduced CO2 emissions.

Set to reach customers in July, the latest line-up is equipped with wholly new or revised engines, delivering reductions in CO2 emissions of up to 15 per cent. For example, the output of the 1.8 TFSI S-tronic model has seen emissions fall from 179 g/km to 153 g/km.

All four petrol engines that power the revised A3 line-up have been modified to maximise efficiency. The TDI range has adopted a 2.0-litre unit with common rail piezo fuel injection, first seen in the A4 Saloon.

The new unit replaces the familiar 2.0-litre pump jet injection engine, bringing significant gains in economy and a 15 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions.

A six-speed manual transmission is common to all versions, bar the five-speed 1.9 TDI, and it can be replaced at extra cost by the S-tronic dual clutch transmission.

The latest generation A3 models are supported by familiar McPherson strut front and four link rear suspension, bringing control, composure and agility to the range. This can be enhanced in selected versions by the high-tech Audi magnetic ride system, already used by the TT and R8 sports cars.

The new A3 range begins with standard specifications, with comfort-oriented SE and performance-focused Sport and S-line trim options. The standard spec has been enhanced with manual air conditioning at no extra cost.

The SE model will now have a multi-function leather-rimmed steering wheel, a front centre armrest, a Driver's Information system, front fog lamps and special 16-inch alloy wheels. A premium of £650 over the standard model has been levied.

The S-line specification, including a unique front and rear bumper design, new 18-inch alloys and S-line interior equipment, is the only A3 trim line to be available in the UK with Xenon Plus head lamps with LED strip daytime running lights.
