Jaguar F-Type

The new Jaguar F-Type is very much closer to reality. And it's shaping up very nicely by the sound of it

If you were at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in June you would’ve seen a camouflaged Jaguar F-Type hitting the famous hill. And heard it! Well, we’ll all get to see it in the metal (aluminium) in late September in Paris, but until the motor show, here are some impressive-sounding power details.

The F-Type will be launched as a soft-top convertible with a range of three petrol engines. Starting at a respectable 340bhp and rising to a whopping (in the region of) 500bhp. The new 3-litre, V6 motor, with supercharger back up, will come with two power outputs – 340bhp and 380bhp. Or, if you’re a real speed demon, you’ll be looking at the 5-litre supercharged V8 that can already be seen doing such a lovely job in the current crop of fast Jags.

The new V6 motor looks compact and relatively lightweight, but one might wonder if the V8 motor might be a little heavy for the Porsche Boxter-sized new F-Type. Of course, I’m sure the Jag engineers have balanced the big aluminium V8 motor for poise in the F-Type, and a ‘small’ car with that seriously grunty engine is surely set to be an absolute hoot to drive. We shall see.

In other big-number-news, Jaguar created some half-a-million separate F-Type design analyses comprising 10-million computer CPU hours of processing. All this data-crunching earned the engineers some 300TB of data, and, had that same amount of design analysis been completed on physical cars, the number of prototype F-Types built would have filled the majority of the UK’s motorways bumper-to-bumper. Just picture that!

Ian Hoban, Jaguar’s Vehicle Line Director, commented: “When you are working on a Jaguar sports car the expectations of the world are huge. We’re really pleased how the attributes have translated from the virtual simulation work we’ve done into the physical world.

“Now, we’re refining and adding those last few percentage points – that true element of honing which the Jaguar test team are delivering – which will turn a great sports car into an exceptional one.”

We, as a bunch of Brits at TotallyMotor, are all behind the nippy new curvy cat to be a big success, and with a thumping V8 up front it’s hard to see it being anything else. And to celebrate, here’s a bit of saucy-engine-sound F-Type video for you…
