It is a big day in the world of premium SUVs and crossover-type cars today at TotallyMotor. As well as the new Infiniti FX, we can also let you know that Mercedes has launched a truly eye-watering version of the ML. This one goes way beyond the realm of the standard soccer mom taxi in terms of price as well as performance. It is the ML 63 AMG.
The OTR price is a rather stonking £82,995 but that will give you a 525bhp 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 engine with 516 lb-ft of torque. If that seems a little weedy for you, you can always go for the optional AMG Performance Package and you'll get an additional 32 horses, another 44 lb-ft of torque, an AMG Performance steering wheel, an AMG carbon fibre engine cover and red brake calipers.
The engine is mated to the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission - a very efficient seven-speed box, in other words - and there's a stop-start function to improve efficiency by almost 40% and cut CO2 emissions by nearly 30%.
The Active Curve System with AirMATIC self-levelling air suspension improves the control and handling and it all grinds to a fine halt with high-performance brakes with internally ventilated and perforated discs.
Discreetly sporty is how Merc describes the looks of the ML 63 AMG. The bodywork is unmistakably AMG around the aprons and side skirts. Other AMG touches include AMG-specific LED daytime running lamps, an AMG sports exhaust system with two twin tailpipes and the ‘V8 BITURBO’ lettering on the front wings.
There's also a very AMG interior with leather sports seats, heated front seats, a four-spoke steering wheel trimmed in Nappa leather, AMG instruments, floor mats and sports pedals and footrest in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs. There's also the new ML includes the Mercedes-Benz COMAND Online system with Media Interface, a DAB digital radio, a dashboard trimmed in Artico artificial leather and an electric glass sunroof.
Spunk an additional £2,820 for the Driver's Package and you'll have the limited top speed raised from 155mph to 174mph and you'll be able to attend a driver event to learn how to get the most out of your ML. Who knows? You may even learn how to take the beast onto rough terrain.
Your correspondent can attest that the ML is a very capable off-roader, even minus the AMG toys, after an awesome jaunt through Jordan. Even if you don't get your ML 63 AMG to Jordan, there's still plenty of potential to release the car's inner animal here in the UK.
