The city car market segment is hotting up with the VW up! already in dealers and the little Skoda also to come. Sharing the same chassis DNA as its city-ready cousins; the new Mii is now ready for buyers. Prices start at £7,845 OTR for the entry-level Mii S 3-door.
The slim and square SEAT Mii is all about maximised interior space with a wheelbase that is the joint longest in the class and very short front and rear overhangs, while a near-vertical tailgate and generous roofline offer rear passengers joint best-in-class headroom, and the boot is one of the largest in the segment, to boot.
Tucked up front is a 1-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine with an output of either 60PS or 75PS, and as petrol engines make up more than 98% of city car sales, there’ll be no (need) for a diesel engine option at initial launch. Such small and light cars wouldn’t enjoy a heavy diesel block up front, especially as the gains in economy wouldn’t be that great.
The little 3-pot petrol motor returns CO2 emissions from 105g/km, and with the addition of SEAT’s start/stop system and energy recovery CO2 output drops to just 96g/km. This Ecomotive model ducks road tax and the London congestion charge.
Now, these nippy motors are best enjoyed with a manual gearbox, but for those that diss the shifter, there’s a 75PS engine offered with a 5-speed automated-manual ‘box.
Trims-wise, the Mii range starts with the S (£7,845) and S A/C (£8,345) models. Standard equipment here includes black plastic door handles and mirrors, 14-inch steel wheels, an MP3-compatible CD player with auxiliary input and two speakers, speed-variable power steering, a height-adjustable steering wheel and a full complement of airbags.
Next up is the S A/C which gets the S features and air-conditioning. Both of these models are available with the 1-litre 60PS engine.
The Mii Ecomotive (£9,180) is the best of the bunch on economy and emissions with headline eco-figures of 96 g/km of CO2 and a quoted combined consumption figure of 67.3mpg. Inside the Mii Ecomotive are additions to the S A/C spec of electric front windows, body-coloured exterior plastics and wheel covers, remote central locking and a more flexible seating system.
Sitting above the Ecomotive model is the SE (£9,275 - £10,390) which enjoys 14-inch alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel, electric and heated door mirrors and interior dress-ups like a gloss white dashboard panel.
And finally, to cap off the Mii range, it’s the 1-litre 75PS Sport (£9,980). Added to the SE’s kit are front fog lights, dark tinted windows, 15-inch alloy wheels, a gloss grey dash panel, trim highlights and a darker upholstery design. Like the Ecomotive, the Sport runs on lower suspension set up for better eco-aero.
