The Citroen DS5. Lookin' good and comin' soon...

After the release of many tantalising photos and a certain well-known car magazine already awarding it a Family Car of the Year prize, Citroen has now let us in on the prices, specs and a UK on-sale date for the new DS5. It will be available from April 2 and it will be priced from £22,400 up to £32,200 for the top-of-the-line DSport Hybrid4 version. It started life as the C-SportLounge concept car and now it has become a reality - we like it when concepts make it to the production line.

The Hybrid4 is Citroen's first diesel-hybrid production car and it has a 200bhp powertrain with 163bhp from the diesel engine powering the front wheels and a 37bhp electric motor up the back. CO2 emissions are 99g/km and it has four modes: Auto, the default mode which switches between the two power sources without the driver having to do anything, ZEV for zero-emissions electric driving, Sport where power is shared between the front and back and 4WD where all four wheels are powered at once for rough ground or low-grip conditions - rather like the ice puddles your correspondent spotted this morning.

As well as the hybrid, there is one petrol and two diesel engines on offer. The e-HDi 110 Airdream has stop-start micro-hybrid technology which cuts emissions by up to 15% in heavy traffic. The petrol engine is a direct-injected, turbocharged number that is probably the highest on the fun factor. There are three gearboxes to choose from - a six-speed manual, a six-speed automatic and a six-speed EGS, an automated manual system.

Five people can fit in the DS5 along with 465 litres of boot space. Eight body colours, six alloy wheel designs and nine upholstery options are on offer as well, including leather and cloth. Two-tone interiors are another choice.

The DS5 achieved the maximum 5-star Euro NCAP test rating, including a 97% Safety Assist score. Standard safety equipment includes Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, anti-lock brakes, Electronic Stability Control and intelligent traction control. Other cool kit include keyless access and start, smart beam headlights, colour head-up display, reversing camera with colour screen, electric lumbar adjustment and massage function on the driver’s seat, dual-zone air conditioning, programmable speed limited and cruise control, and Lane Departure Warning System.

There has already been plenty of interest in this one so we'll keep an eye out for them on the road come April - and as soon as we get behind the wheel of one, especially that interesting hybrid, we'll let you know even more.
