The new Ford EcoBoost 1-litre engine sits on an A4 sheet of paper, but still packs a tidy punch thanks to a touch of turbocharging
Ford will be rolling out their newest environmentally sound engine across the Ford Focus range in the UK next month. It's the exceedingly efficient new 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine - it's turbocharged, it has direct injection and its power will be comparable to that of the current 1.6-litre. And the good news keeps coming - it is a fine British product with the engine developed by UK engineers at Dunton and Dagenham.
It's a small powerhouse - the cylinder block can fit on a sheet of A4 paper - but it has a mighty output. Power will be up to 123bhp, the same as the 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine, but CO2 emissions are down and fuel economy is much improved. The 123bhp version will be available on the five-door Focus with fuel economy at 56.5mpg and CO2 emissions at 114g/km. Meanwhile, the 99bhp version offers a combined fuel economy of 58.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 109g/km, meaning it's road tax-free in the first year. Maximum torque is 125lb-ft and 148lb-ft with overboost, exceeding the 1.6-litre version.
As well as the low road tax for private customers, company car drivers will get nice benefit-in-kind rates of only 13% per cent in 2012/2013. So if you get one of these engines in a Focus Zetec, savings will be of up to £32 per month at the 40% tax level versus the current 1.6-litre Ford Focus engines.
The new Ford Focus range is priced from £13,995 OTR. The new engine is priced £250 OTR above the 1.6-litre 125PS engine and after its debut in the Focus, it will subsequently feature in Ford C-MAX, Grand C-MAX and new Ford B-MAX later this year.
