2012 Mitsubishi ASX

The refreshed, 2012 Mitsubishi ASX, seen here in the Black edition. Hangin' tough.

This week sees the first shipment of the new Mitsubishi ASX land in Britain, giving motorists another option in the family car/crossover market. Built on the same platform as the Outlander, Lancer and Lancer Evolution X, the ASX is a genre-crossing car offering practicality, meaty good looks and engines that are greener than ever.

There's a choice of petrol and diesel powertrains. The 1.8-litre 114bhp diesel achieves fuel economy of 54.3mpg with CO2 emissions of 136g/km while the 1.6-litre petrol engine offers 47.1mpg with CO2 emissions at 139g/km. Road tax on the diesel has shifted from Band F to Band E making the annual cost £115. To help the ASX clean up its act, it comes with low rolling resistance tyres, regenerative brakes and intelligent power management.

Caravanners, horse owners and trailer towing types will be pleased to know that the petrol variant has increased braked towing capacity from 1,100kg to 1,200kg.

Safety features include stability control, traction control, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, seven airbags, an emergency stop signal system and Mitsubishi's RISE safety technology which dissipates the energy from impact away from the passengers.

But what about the price? The good news is that pricing starts at £16,499 for the ASX2 1.6-litre petrol version. At the top of the 10-car range is the ASX4 Black 1.8-litre diesel four-wheel-drive priced at £25,895.

The first allocation will be available in the middle of this month and this will be a batch of ASX 1.8-litre diesels with four-wheel drive. The two-wheel-drive diesel variants will be on sale at the end of March and the petrol cars will be coming in the second quarter of this year.
