2012 Toyota Aygo

The refreshed-for-2012 Toyota Aygo gets the new style Toyota family face, as well as the must-have city-friendly 99g/km CO2 engine

While the big guns are out in force in Detroit next week, the Brussels motor show is showing off some smaller offerings, such as the new Citroen C1 and the new Toyota Aygo.

The latest Aygo has a more aerodynamic look about it with a wider front bumper, integrated fog lights and trapezoidal air intakes. The turning circle is still tiny at 4.73m and the car is just 15mm longer than the predecessor.

And the good news is that the new Aygo is cleaner than ever with zero road tax thanks to the 99g/km CO2 emissions on the five-speed manual version. The Multimode automated manual transmission has CO2 emissions at 104g/km. Filling her up will be easy on the pocket with combined fuel economy around the 65.7mpg mark and a still-frugal 63.8 for the automated manual. This is courtesy of a 1.0-litre petrol engine, an all-aluminium unit that makes it one of the lightest around at just 67kg.

Options will include LED daytime running lights as well as both a three-door and five-door version. Dark-tinted rear privacy glass will be on offer in both body types as well as new 14-inch wheels and a choice of seven paint colours, including a fun metallic orange.

The interior has also been upgraded with a new dark grey finish and lower dashboard sections. There's also a new steering wheel with leather trim and paddle shifters for the models using Toyota's automated manual transmission. The ring surrounds of the speedo, tacho and air vents are finished in either grey, orange or black with the front door speaker surrounds in silver or orange. Even the opening angle of the parcel shelf has been changed to give easier access to the loadspace.

There will be two audio systems on offer - a 35watt AM/FM/CD package with two or four speakers or a funky new system with Bluetooth, a multi-language display and USB port for the iPod.

UK prices and specs are yet to be announced but we should have the good news soon as it goes on sale here in March.
