The Subaru Impreza WRX STI S206 is one battle-ready bad-boy. Great, if you live in Japan!

A razor-sharpened Subaru Impreza WRX STI with 20bhp more than the “standard” WRX STI and uprated suspension, aero and interior. Sounds good, doesn’t it? But, before you put your bungalow / kidney / first-born son on the market, this super-Subaru is for the Japanese market only. Just like the many extra-strong versions before it. And only 300 will be built. However, there are ways of getting around the single-country marketing of this car…

So, what do all you currently wide-eye’d Scooby fans get for an undisclosed-but-doubtless-top-heavy S206 pricetag? 

Well, as we know, power is now at 316bhp from the throbbing 2-litre, twin-scroll turbocharged boxer engine, with torque now sitting at a distinctly healthy 318ft lb. These power-ups are bought about by the S206’s STI-programmed ECU and a freer-flowing exhaust hanging off the “exclusively-made engine” with “weight balance between piston, connecting rod, and crankshaft optimized to enhance the rev feel”. A bespoke engine with matched and lightened components, basically, and these go-goodies are said to have “heightened the accelerator response and increased low to mid range torque”. 

Bilstein dampers and STI springs are bespoke for this special Subaru, as are a flexible front tower bar and a flexible front draw stiffener, all said to “improve straight-driving performance” whilst speeding up cornering agility. The pretty part of this new suspension and chassis set up are the 19-inch BBS aluminium, S206-only light alloy wheels, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber.

It’s clearly all good under that big-scooped-hood, and while the usual trademark sky-scraping rear spoiler is attractively absent from the S206, other tweaks to the front splitter, heavily-sculpted front wings and front grille bring the extra attitude, improve the aero, and keep things nicely exclusive. 

Inside, you’d probably expect to see a bit of Recaro seating in this XL-STI, and you’d be right, with a couple of race-ready German bucket seats doing the Alcantara honours. All in all a truly cracking-sounding new Subaru package. But wait, it gets even better. Well, kind of. 

To celebrate their class win at the 24 Hours Nurburgring endurance race held in June, Subaru will build 100 extra-special version of the S206, called the “NBR Challenge Package” that get all of the S206’s good stuff plus a dry carbon rear spoiler and centre of gravity-lowering carbon fibre roof. Only problem is, they’ve sold out already. D’oh!
