2012 Ford Focus ST

We all have to wait until summer 2012 to get our hands on the new 247bhp Ford Focus ST. But the boys down at the Flying Squad are already flying 'em

James Bond may have his Aston Martin and Iron Man may have his Audi R8 but for the Flying Squad detectives of The Sweeney, it’ll be black Ford Focus ST hot hatches, thank you very much.

Ray Winstone, playing Jack Regan, and Ben Drew (Plan B), playing George Carter, will be behind the wheel of these little beasts as they give chase to assorted toe-rags across London in this film version of the classic 70s cop show. And unlike an Aston or an R8, there’s more chance of any of us being able to afford one in our own garages.

It’s powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder EcoBoost engine with 247bhp and it will be joining other Fords on the set of The Sweeney. Mondeos, Galaxys and Transits will be used as unmarked vehicles in the film. The heavy presence of Fords has a long history with this gloriously un-PC programme - in the 70s TV series, the Flying Squad gave chase and nicked villains with the able assistance of Ford Granadas, Consuls and Cortinas.

ST will go on sale in 40 countries next year and the production version was unveiled at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. UK prices are still to be announced but we can tell you that the Focus ST will be going on sale here next summer, followed by the film premiere in September. Now shut it!
