Jaguar XKR-S Convertible: lust on wheels

The new, 2012 Jaguar XKR-S Convertible goes on show in LA this weekend. The perfect place to let the fastest drop-top big cat purr
It’s one of those cars that inspires a physical reaction as it flies past, the supercharged V8 engine making glorious noises thanks to the 542 horses under the hood. It’s the new Jaguar XKR-S, the most potent and fast of all the Jaguar convertibles.
Top speed is 186mph, it does 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds and just to keep you grinning and make your hair stand on end, there’s 502lb-ft of torque. Adding to the gorgeous sound of this beast is the Performance Active exhaust. Keeping the power-to-weight ratio healthy and the car nice and rigid is a lightweight aluminium structure. Meanwhile, the suspension has been upgraded with the Adaptive Dynamics system for a nice mix of awesome handling and agility, while not inducing lumbago.
We say the looks of this car are instantly drool-worthy - Jaguar likes to express this lust in somewhat more refined terms with the styling changes “informed by Computational Fluid Dynamics to reduce lift and maximise aerodynamic stability.” We simply like what we see.
There’s a saucy new front bumper design with a wider, lower air intake and carbon fibre splitter and its 10mm lower in height. At the back, there’s a new rear wing with more lovely carbon fibre. The roof opens and closes in just 18 seconds and the seats are adjustable in 16 ways, making it convenient as well as carnal.
But when can we have one and how much will it cost? Deliveries for the UK start early in the new year and pricing is estimated to start at (take a deep breath...) £103,000.
We’ve had a (wild!) ride in the ferocious tin-top big cat and you can read our Jaguar XKR-S road test review right here…
