The Suzuki Swift EV Hybrid uses a smaller, lighter and quicker-charging battery, and a frugal petrol engine to stretch out the mpg
Carrying on the trend of revealing what will be on the stand before the actual show, Suzuki has delivered a pre-Tokyo Motor Show missive. Small cars will be a big feature of the Suzuki stand, a segment Suzuki has excelled at for a long time.
The Regina will be revealed, a compact car for the world market that weighs in at just 730kg and has a petrol engine with an astonishing fuel economy of 91mpg and emissions at a low 70g/km.
Even smaller is the Q-concept, a two-seater that is just 2.5m in length and seats two people in tandem. Suzuki says this is halfway between a motorbike and a car and is designed for short journeys. It has a turning circle that would be the envy of a London black cab and can be parked in the tiniest space. The Q-concept can be configured so there’s a single seat at the front and a two-child seat at the back or a single seat with a cargo area in the back.
Suzuki will also be making clear its plans to take on the increasingly crowded small hybrid segment with the Tokyo launch of the Swift EV Hybrid. The latest Suzuki to wear the Swift badge, the EV Hybrid is a compact electric car with an engine-driven generator. It can travel 20km-30km on electric power alone and the range can be extended using the generator. Unlike electric cars that rely entirely on battery power, the Swift EV Hybrid has a smaller battery that is quicker to charge, lighter, cheaper and uses fewer resources.
