VW GT up!

The VW GT up! concept car. Build it, build it, build it!

Volkswagen has already opened the order books for the kookily punctuated up! city car. Priced from just £7,995, it’s a real bargain but we might just hold our horsepowers here at TotallyMotor Towers and wait for the GT up! to go into production.

Launched as a concept car at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the GT up! could be Vee-Dub’s next hot hatch. It has a hard act to follow with the Golf GTI attaining iconic status since its 1976 launch and the Polo GTI proving to be more fun than a bathtub of champagne, but once the GT up! becomes a production reality, we’ll be beating a path to the nearest showroom for a test-drive.

The first indications that the GT up! is different to the base model are the wide-mouthed honeycomb grille, ducts to cool the brakes and two chromed tailpipes. Adding to the sporty styling so it doesn’t look quite as utilitarian as the base model, there are wing-shaped LED daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, a deep roof spoiler and black diffuser.

Inside, there is a nod to Golf GTI styling with a blue chequered seat pattern and black roof lining. The dashboard and upper door trim panels are in gloss black with blue rings around the air vent nozzles. A three-spoke, chunky leather steering wheel is another funky feature.

While there are no official performance specs for the GT up! as yet, it is expected that it will be able to pump out at least 100bhp, possibly more. Frankly, we can’t wait.
