2012 BMW 5 Series 520d EfficientDynamics

The 2012 BMW 5 Series 520d EfficientDynamics packs 119g/km of CO2 and a combined economy of 62.8mpg. Straight to the top of the class!

Keen to kill four birds with one stone - or at least with one announcement - BMW has this week revealed new models for four of their popular cars, the 5 Series, the Z4, 6 Series and 1 Series.

The latest 5 Series to hit the market is the 520d EfficientDynamics Saloon. This comes with an economical new diesel engine with combined fuel economy of 62.8mpg, 280lb-ft of torque and 184bhp. CO2 emissions are pretty impressive for a luxury saloon at 119g/km. There is an eight-speed automatic transmission, stop-start function and double wishbone suspension as standard.

Two new Z4s have also been launched - the sDrive 20i and the sDrive 28i. Both have four-cylinder petrol engines with CO2 emissions of 159g/km and combined fuel economy of 41.5mpg - the 20i has 184bhp and the 28i has 245bhp. The 0-62mph sprint is achieved in 6.9 seconds in the 20i and 5.7 seconds in the 28i.

The third generation 6 Series Coupe has also been launched by BMW. This latest 2+2 coupe maintains the sweeping, swooping design that has helped make the model such a success and the canny Bavarians have added two new turbocharged petrol engines and a twin turbo diesel powertrain as well as a new chassis.

There is some respectable power going on with these new models - the 650i Coupe has 407bhp and 442lb-ft of torque, the 640i has 320bhp and 332lb-ft of torque and the 640d has 313bhp and 464lb-ft of torque. All three variants have an electronically governed top speed of 155mph. The diesel version is far and away the best on fuel economy - while the 650i and 640i have combined consumptions of 26.6mpg and 36.2mpg respectively, the 640d does a very impressive 51.4mpg on the combined cycle.

Finally, the second generation of the 1 Series, an already popular car in the compact luxury segment, is now on sale. It’s the only rear-wheel drive car in its segment and more than 2.2 million have already been sold globally. BMW EfficientDynamics technology is fitted as standard and it’s 83mm longer, 14mm wider and 30mm longer in the wheelbase than its predecessor. Fuel economy across the whole range is good, starting at 49.6mpg for the 116i to 62.8mpg for the diesels.

The new, 119g/km 520d should be a hit with company car drivers

The Z4 gets some new engines

The new 6 Series Coupe gets more power and makes it more cleanly

The new 1 Series gets bigger and more efficient
