The Daimler SP250 "Dart" high-speed cop car of the early 60s. It's up for sale at Historics of Brooklands for around £30k. Who knows what's been stuffed under those leather seats!
If you want a car with a bit of poke, one that’s good for a spot of nicking and will look good if you gad about in a uniform, then the 1962 Daimler SP250 police chase car could be the motor for you. It’s going under the hammer in Surrey by Historics at Brooklands on October 22.
In November 1962, Scotland Yard took delivery of this stunning Daimler, a jet-black, right-hand drive soft-top with a top speed of 130mph. It was used with the hood down as part of a rather groovy campaign for visible policing.
Powered by a 2.5-litre V8 engine mated to a special automatic gearbox with a cable-operated device that allowed intermediate gears to be held longer during chases. It was such a successful cop car that the Met ended buying 26 of them.
They were retired from the force in 1967 but 670 ELL, the one that’s up for auction went on to become an official course car for 13 years at the Goodwood Revival. The present owner has enjoyed this car for the past 32 years. For anyone wary of buying a car from the 60s, you might want to know that this car has been on a continuous programme of maintenance, restoration and improvement. It’s in original condition with a sympathetic re-trim and stunning paintwork.
If you fancy pretending you’re on a retro set of The Bill, you can have some fun with some of the original law enforcement equipment such as a chromed Winkworth police bell.
It is expected that bidding for the SP250 will be lively with the car’s estimated value being at £30,000 - £35,000. The car can be viewed on October 21 between 10am and 8pm. Entry is by catalogue only, available prior to, or on the day of the auction.
