2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe

Run to the sun. The new, 2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe blasts the Welsh back lanes

BMW expects there’ll be at least 1,100 British drivers with deep enough pockets for the new 6 Series Coupe, which goes on sale on October 15. Priced from £59,565 for the 640i SE Coupe through to a slightly chunkier £71,840 for the 650i M Sport Coupe, the range will include two turbocharged petrol engines and a twin-turbocharged diesel.

Power is at 313bhp for the 640d, 320bhp for the 640i and 407bhp for the 650i and all have an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Fuel economy is best in the 640d at 51.4mpg. BMW’s Efficient Dynamics technology has been applied to all models with the ECO PRO system designed to ensure maximum efficiency even with the air conditioning turned on.

This is the third generation BMW 6 Series Coupe and the latest incarnation takes the luxury 2+2 concept even further in terms of kit and luxury. This is roomier than the previous two versions and standard kit includes electronic power steering, energy regenerating brakes, rear parking distance control, Dakota leather seats, xenon headlights, individually adjustable seats in the front and back, integrated seatbelt system, multimedia sat-nav and Easy Entry for elegance when getting in and out of the back of the car. An eight-speed automatic transmission is also fitted as standard on the 640d Coupe with the fuel-saving automatic stop-start function. Sports seats and Comfort seats can be fitted as an option.

Luggage space is 460 litres - or in the good golfing measurement, that is enough space for three golf bags. A through-loading ski storage system can be added as an extra, allowing for two pairs of skis to be transported easily.

The design is a luscious triumph of swooping lines with a dramatic coupe roofline, character lines, bulging wheel arches, set-back passenger compartment, long bonnet and short overhangs. It is unmistakably BMW, complete with a slanted BMW kidney grille, but still an individualistic-looking sportscar. A 74mm increase in length, 39mm width increase and 5mm drop in height give it a commanding presence on the road.
