Vauxhall versus Ford in MPV war
Friday, 16 September 2011 8:23 PM
The new, 2012 Vauxhall Zafira Tourer looks good and gets some pukka spec for around £20k. Will Ford fight back for MPV supremacy? Buyers certainly hope so!
The gloves are off as Vauxhall issues a challenge to Ford with a £1,200 price difference on the two automakers’ popular MPVs. Vauxhall has announced that the entry-level price for the Zafira Tourer which premiered at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week will be £21,000, compared with £22,200 for the rival Ford S-Max.
The entry-level Zafira Tourer will feature a 1.8-litre, 138bhp engine and air conditioning, DAB, cruise control, MP3 connectivity, six airbags, seven speakers, active headrests and Flex7 seating as standard. First launched as a concept car at the Geneva Motor Show, the production-ready Zafira stays pretty true to the concept in design and intent.
Those who want to spend a bit more than the entry price can treat themselves to extras such as Traffic Sign Recognition, Side Blind Spot Alert, Advanced Park Assist and there are two new engines added to the range, a 1.4-litre turbo petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel.
But the Blue Oval will most likely savour the challenge posed by old rival Vauxhall. Indeed, with a feisty and full stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show, including the Ford Fiesta ST with its fighting spirit and the stunning Ford Evos concept, we eagerly await Ford’s response to Vauxhall’s challenge in the increasingly competitive MPV market. Your move, Ford.
