We’ve already said hi to the new Ford Focus ST for 2012; freshly unveiled yesterday at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Now it’s time to meet the hottest Ford Fiesta in town; hot out of the ST oven.
The new Fiesta ST is seen here as a concept car, but it’s pretty safe to say that the production car will look a lot like the chunky little chap in these here pics, after all the Focus ST production car remained very true to the concept models.
We love an ST and an RS here in good ol’ Blightly, but the last Fiesta ST we saw wasn’t actually that hot. Well, fear not, the new Fiesta ST comes ready for some fast ‘n’ fun back lane action with a turbo under the hood, sharpened suspension and WRC-inspired styling. Sounds like a pretty tasty recipe to me.
“The Fiesta has a rich history of high-performance models so a new ST performance model is a logical next step in our performance vehicle strategy for our global small cars,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “The Fiesta ST Concept continues that tradition by showing how a global performance version of our best-selling B-car can be both technically advanced and dramatically styled.
“With a racing silhouette inspired by the global Fiesta race and rally cars currently competing on the world stage, and influenced by the unique appearance of the all-new Focus ST, the new Fiesta ST Concept is an exciting demonstration of the road-going Fiesta’s future potential.”
For the Fiesta ST concept, the 1.6-litre Ford EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine pumps out 180PS (178bhp) with 240Nm of torque, enough to fire (in theory) the new ST to 62mph in less than 7 seconds. A heady 150mph top speed is also on the cards.
Quick is definitely good but, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and using the latest in Ford’s wide range of eco-electronics, should mean that the new Fiesta ST will only pollute to the tune of 140g/km of CO2 or less.
A lowered stance, widened wheel arches filled with 17-inch alloy wheels and full ST body kit are all inspired by the brutally seductively styled Ford Fiesta WRC competition car, and basing road cars on racecars is probably the best idea since baking flour, water and yeast together and cutting the resulting hot chunk into equal-width portions. Fiesta ST is painted here in eye-popping Molten Orange. Bam!
In fact the only bad news about this feisty new Fiesta ST is the planned 2013 on-sale date.
