The future shape of the Land Rover Defender

2015 Land Rover Defender

The 2015 Land Rover Defender could look like this. That's if the punters at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show like it...

It’s the Land Rover Defender, but not as we know it. Say goodbye to the “boxy” Defender of classic days gone by, and hello to the new shape of off-road aggression; the all-new DC100.

Planned to go on sale in 2015 – the current Defender just got a new, cleaner engine – this design concept sets out styling and functionality ideas for the new Defender, and Land Rover are looking for feedback. DC100 will be on show at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, so if you’re in town and love a bit of beefy Defender, drop by and give them your thoughts on the new mud-plugger.

Commenting on the Land Rover DC100 concept car, Gerry McGovern, Director of Design, Land Rover said, "Replacing the iconic Defender is one of the biggest challenges in the automotive design world; it is a car that inspires people worldwide. This isn't a production-ready concept but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century."

John Edwards, Global Brand Director, Land Rover added, "Loved the world over for its simple, honest and distinctive design, we are determined that the new Defender will be true to its heritage, while meeting the requirements of a changing global market.

"We plan to engage with existing and potential customers to help us finalize the details of the new vehicle. One thing's for sure, it's going to be an exciting journey, and we can't wait to get going," added Edwards.

Exciting and challenging I expect, with many international Land Rover Defender customers happily living in the past when it comes to their 4x4 of choice. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it; as they say.
You snooze, you loose; is another saying that could apply here. Still, with the ultra-modern Range Rover Evoque doing brisk business right now, perhaps an entirely forward-looking new Defender could do the same.
