The new 1-Series comes to showrooms this September bringing more space and better efficiency to the popular baby Beemer
The premium compact segment is becoming increasingly crowded with BMW, Audi and Mercedes in particular producing cars that are luxurious and dead easy to drive. Now BMW is again hitting the market with the second generation of the 1-Series.
The rear-wheel drive layout - the only in its class - ups the sporty fun factor, it’s a bit roomier than the first generation and it is cleaner than ever before. With CO2 emissions down to 99g/km on the 116d EfficientDynamics model, it is the first production BMW to break the 100g/km mark. The new ECO PRO fuel-saving mode further improves efficiency and the TwinPower turbocharged petrol engines and revised diesel engines are all more efficient than the first generation while not sacrificing power or performance. The EfficientDynamics technologies are fitted as standard.
Design-wise, the new 1-Series looks chunkier and more aggressive appearance - it definitely has the looks, attitude and comfort levels of a bigger car rather than a mere compact. It is 83mm longer, 14mm wider and 30mm longer in the wheelbase than the predecessor.
BMW is hoping the next generation 1-Series will continue on from the sales success of the original which has sold more than 2.2 million cars worldwide.
The new BMW 1-Series goes on sale in the UK on September 17 with a choice of three diesel and two petrol engines. Prices start at £19,375 OTR for the 116i ES.
