Mazda MX-5 Sport Black

The new Mazda MX-5 Sport Black special edition looks great in, er, green

Based on the 275bhp, 850kg Mazda MX-5 GT race car that has had a successful season in this year’s Britcar Production GTN Championship, the MX-5 Sport Black. Only 500 will be made.

The plan is for this to be a fun-to-drive roadster with a decent amount of poke - just like the MX-5 GT which has had two podiums this year and has proven competitive against the likes of Lotus, BMW and Ferrari.

Available now for £22,995 (OTR), it is £360 more than the 2.0-litre, 157bhp six-speed transmission Sport Tech model on which it is based. It’s got a Brilliant Black retractable hard top that pops up or down in 12 seconds and body colours are Spirited Green (a saucy metallic), Crystal White Pearlescent and Velocity Red mica. The 17-inch alloy wheels are a dark gunmetal colour.

Inside, the black leather interior has sand-coloured stitching.

Just like the Sport Tech model, the Sport Black has climate control air conditioning, a Bose sound system, a hands-free Bluetooth system, cruise control and front fog lights.

Mazda is also souping up its popular Mazda2 five-door hatchback with the Mazda2 Black also being added to the mix with only 618 to roll off the production line. It will have a retro-tastic black vinyl roof, privacy glass, 16-inch matt black alloy wheels, a rear bumper sports trim and the same funky colours as the MX-5 Sport Black.

Based on the 82bhp, 1.3-litre Tamura model, the Mazda2 Black is a bargain-priced premium hatch with prices starting at £12,395 for this limited edition.
