The attitude to risk among young drivers must be changed.

Post-test driver training is not the only way to improve road safety from newly-qualified drivers, it is claimed.

Charity RoadSafe says that these courses can play an important part in building skills and confidence for driving in adverse weather conditions and on motorways, but a change in attitude is also needed.

According to the group's director Adrian Walsh, passing the standard driving test is seen as some sort of liberation for young drivers and as such they go out on the roads on their own and take risks.

He added: "We need to change this attitude, and help new and young drivers be realistic in their management of risk.

"We can also take steps to reduce the chance and severity of collisions driving safe modern cars really helps."

RoadSafe recently reminded holiday drivers of the importance of being well-rested before undertaking long journeys, as falling asleep at the wheel is a major cause of accidents.
