UK drivers are being warned of "exceptionally busy" roads this Easter compared to the previous two years.

Harsh winter weather and a dispiriting 2009 will encourage many Brits to take advantage of the spring break, said Trafficmaster.

"It's anticipated that the majority of Britain's registered road vehicles will be on the road at some time over the Easter weekend, with Maundy Thursday on 1st April likely to be the busiest day across the Easter holiday period," said Georgina Read from the driving services company.

The firm predicts some 20 million vehicles could take to the UK's roads over the Easter weekend and although most road works will be suspended, congestion is still likely in most areas.

It said the M25 is likely to be the worst hit, followed by the M1, M6, M5 and M4.

Drivers should plan their journeys well in advance and be aware of alternative routes should they face jams or diversions.

Packing things to keep the children occupied is also well-advised, as nothing makes a delayed journey seem even longer than bored youngsters in the backseat.
