Here's what the new Toyota Yaris will look like.

It's out with the gently curvy current look and in with an entirely more angular incarnation for the third-generation supermini, with Toyota perhaps searching for a more sporting intention to the new car.

And it's an important new supermini too, having sold over 3.5 million units since launch in 1999.

There's been a bit of a cult following for the Yaris over the years, with its nimble chassis, capacious-for-a-small-car interior and cheeky looks winning the hearts and minds of so many buyers, not only in Japan where the car sold 1.4 million units, but in Europe; the world's most important car market.

There could indeed be many differences between the European car and the Japanese domestic market offering, but these images from Toyota are a good place for any through-and-through Yaris fans to start dreaming of their next purchase.

In-keeping with new car development, the new Yaris is a little bigger than before and is evolving its frugal engines to suit the ever more conservative use of fossil fuels.

Full, Europe-specific details are yet to be confirmed by Toyota, but expect small capacity engines along the same lines as the current car, namely a 1-litre, 68bhp unit and a 93bhp, 1.3-litre, coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The new Yaris comes to the UK in the summer of 2011.
