A new 4x4 option is now available for much of the Skoda range, offering better grip in adverse conditions
Skoda has announced the introduction of a four-wheel drive 2.0 TDI CR 140bhp engine with automatic transmission to the hatchback and estate versions of its Superb, Octavia Estate and Octavia Scout cars.
The system is designed to tackle more challenging conditions that drivers may face, which would often leave two-wheel drive competitors "stranded", Skoda claimed. Power distribution is controlled electronically by a Haldex clutch which will give 96 per cent of the total power to the front axle under normal traction conditions.
Skoda continued: "In adverse weather conditions - similar to those experienced in the UK last winter - the Haldex system reacts in a split second to redirect power to those wheels with better traction, greatly increasing driving safety."
It has more applications than icy driving, however, as 4x4 technology will allow for more controlled caravan and trailer towing. With drive to rear wheels disengaged when not in use, fuel consumption is also kept to a minimum.
The option is available to order in the UK this month and prices start at £21,705.
Skoda recently launched a new multi-million pound national marketing campaign for the Fabia vRS, targeting younger demographics.
