After taking to the international stage for the first time earlier this year in New York's Times Square, the latest generation of Volkswagen Jetta has made its European debut at the Allianz Arena, the home of FC Bayern Munich football club.

Klaus Bischoff, the head of Volkswagen Design, styled the new Jetta with a fresh look, but kept close enough to the current VW DNA to ensure the new model is "instantly recognisable" as a Volkswagen.

The new vision of the Jetta is based on a concept shown at the Detroit Motor Show in January and keeps consistency with the new Polo, Passat and Sharan; adopting VW's contemporary design language.

This sixth generation of the Jetta will also be more efficient, as the range includes two separate 1.4-litre TSI engines and two diesel engines: a 1.6-litre TDI 105 PS and a 2.0-litre TDI developing 140 PS. It was confirmed that the 1.6-litre TDI unit will feature BlueMotion Technology, including Stop/Start and battery regeneration.

Three Volkswagens are to compete in the very first RAC Future Car Challenge in November, driving from Madeira Drive in Brighton to Pall Mall in London. The car that is found to have used the least energy on the 57 mile route will be crowned champion.
