Government figures show families spend 13.4 per cent of their outgoings on transport, of which 83 per cent is spent on the family car.

To help reduce costs the AA has launched a guide to cutting motoring costs, called 'The Money Saving Motorist'.

Priced at £1.99 the guide covers tips and advice on how to save in the short and long term.

Edmund King, AA president, said: "Owning and running a car is essential for most people however the rising costs are making this harder for many families.

"By following the advice in this guide motorists can learn not only how to drive more economically but also some key tips on choosing the right car for their lifestyle, saving money on insurance and some basic maintenance that will help make your car more efficient."

The AA say simple tips such as sticking to the speed limit, can save you around £110 a year if you drive 12,000 miles a year.
