Formula one champion Lewis Hamilton, 24, has today been awarded an MBE by the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

The McLaren Mercedes driver, who last year became the youngest ever winner of the FIA formula one world championship, said he felt "humbled" by the honour.

Hamilton will be fighting to retain his title later this month, when the Australian grand prix kicks off the season in Melbourne on March 27th.

Accompanied by his brother, father and step-mother, Hamilton collected the award alongside Sir Richard Dannatt and Olympic gold medal-winning canoeist Tim Brabants.

The twice BBC sports personality of the year runner-up was minus his glamorous Pussycat Dolls girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, who is currently on tour.
