The new Insignia family car from Vauxhall will have excellent residual values in the future, EurotaxGlass's believes.

Experts from the latter company suggest the new £18,962 Insignia 2.0 CDTi SRi five-door will retain 37 per cent (£7,000) of its purchase price as a trade value after three years and 60,000 miles.

This is compared to the equivalent prices for the Vectra, which is only 28 per cent of its original value (£4,950).

"Though starting prices are higher than those of the Vectra, Vauxhall has justified the increase by improving build quality and making it more entertaining to drive," explains Jason King, head of market intelligence at EurotaxGlass's.

"This helps the car compete effectively with the latest generation of upper-medium segment rivals."

"It is as significant a move for the marque as it was in the re-branding of the Cavalier to the Vectra in 1995. The decision shows that Vauxhall wants to position the Insignia as a car of choice, not just another option on a fleet list.

"The design of the Insignia, inside and out, contributes to the above-average residual value forecast," suggests Mr King.

"The distinctive 'blade' that runs along the side of the car enhances the coupe-like silhouette, and the exterior curves are echoed inside, creating a much more driver-focused environment compared to the rigid, angular lines of the Vectra's cabin."

"Thanks to work completed at Vauxhall's Engineering Centre based at Millbrook, the Insignia will be well placed to cope with demanding UK roads.

"A number of new engine options deliver strong performance, balancing enough power with fuel economy and low emissions.

"Digital audio, adaptive headlamps and suspension systems, and the integration of road sign recognition cameras will ensure the car also appeals to the modern car buyer needing both functionality and an engaging drive," concludes Mr King.
