Nissan has unveiled a prototype of its 'All-Around Collision Free' system, designed to help motorists avoid taking a whack from other drivers.

The system incorporates some old and some new technology. The new stuff is 'Side Collision Prevention' (SCP) and 'Back-up Collision Prevention' (BCP).

The older technology is 'Distance Control Assist' (DCA) and 'Lane Departure Prevention' (LDP).

The prototype system extends Nissan's 'safety shield' concept, designed to protect the vehicle and its occupants from potential threats coming from multiple directions.

Side Collision Prevention deals with, among other things, lane changes. Sensors sound a warning if an approaching vehicle is detected in the intended lane.

A yaw mechanism is then activated, helping to prevent collisions.

With Back-up Collision Prevention, rear and side-mounted sensors detect objects in the path of the vehicle, triggering an alarm followed by automatic brake activation.

This could also be useful when reversing out of a parking space, for example.
