The Volvo XC90 premium SUV will receive several updates for the 2009 model year, including a new, lower CO2 figure for the D5 Geartronic.

As well as the drop in CO2 emissions, the model sees the sports-inspired R-Design and new exterior colours added, with alloy wheels and other options giving buyers more choice.

The 2009 XC90 is available to order now, with the first cars arriving in June. Prices start at £32,845 for the D5 S.

The XC90 already boasted a CO2 figure of 219 g/km for the manual 185 PS D5 diesel engine. The 2009 premium model will see emissions rise to 224 g/km, the only premium standard seven-seat SUV achieving a sub-225 g/km figure in both manual and automatic transmissions.

The new figure means the D5 Geartronic engine falls below the key Band G threshold for vehicle excise duty, saving new owners £570 over three years. It will also avoid the £25 congestion charge in London.

As for the R-Design package, it comprises a specially tuned dynamic chassis, stiffer anti-roll bars, firmer shock absorbers and sport-tuned speed-dependent steering. The shock absorbers have stiffer rebound rates and the anti-roll bars are stiffer, offering a high level of stability when cornering.
