The Fiat 500 gained this year's Best Small Car award from What Diesel

The Fiat 500 has been awarded the crown of Best Small Car in the annual What Diesel Car of the Year competition.

The victorious 500 impressed the What Diesel panel of judges with a blend of style, quality and modern diesel engine technology.

Registrations of diesel cars powered by diesel are now close to breaking the 50 per cent barrier of the new vehicle market, so the award could not have come at a better time for the 500.

"This year has seen some tough opposition join the new car market, with the Fiat 500 and Jaguar XF (the overall winner) leading the pack," said Ian Robertson, editor of What Diesel.

The new Fiat 500 can be ordered with 69bhp 1.2-litre or 100bhp 1.4-litre petrol engines, if one doesn't want the 75bhp 1.3-litre MultiJet turbodiesel. Three trim levels are available - Pop, Sport and Lounge.

A starting price of £7,900 on the road makes the Fiat 500 good value for money, with the £10,700 top end version including air conditioning and alloy wheels as standard.
