Renault has announced its Megane range is to be expanded with a coupe version, based on a concept unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

The French manufacturer has also revealed a production version of the vehicle will be on sale in Europe before the end of the year - along with a more conventional five-door version.

"You have the design before your very eyes," said Renault design director Patrick Le Quement. "It's a strong statement".

"The new model won't have the upright line at the rear - it will be more acceptable - but it will shake its arse for sure."

Speaking at the launch of the concept Mr Le Quement also confirmed the saloon, coupe-cabrio and estate body styles would also be refreshed before the end of 2009.

The Scenic MPV will remain in its current form for a little longer, however, with the third-generation version due in about 18 months.
