Welcome to the future… according to Volvo

That’s the first thought that springs to mind on stepping inside the XC60 T5 SE R Design because it’s fitted with a sophisticated and intelligent cruise control that literally thinks for the driver. It ensures that this crossover travels at the right speed and keeps the correct distance behind the car in front. This sees it braking and speeding up of its own accord. It’s not infallible though because as I found, really torrential rain resulted in an unnerving ‘blocked radar’ warning appearing on the dash, instantly cutting out cruise control. This was the worst rain I have driven in and it’s unfortunate that it highlighted this glitch. Once the rain eased the system worked again.

At times the radars were also a little too sensitive for my liking. For instance, when in the outside lane of the motorway the sensors became aware of vehicles in the middle lane, resulting in the XC60 slowing down when there was no need - making for a jerky ride and frustrating performance at times. But the idea is a good one that just needs a little improving, in my opinion.

Aside from this the Volvo handled the very unsympathetic weather battering with ease, its height ensuring that it could tackle widespread flooding.

When the sun finally emerged the massive panorama sunroof was greatly appreciated. This also provided a really light and airy feeling inside.

In the XC60 Volvo has attempted to combine off-road ruggedness and practicality with sporty styling and safety. It has pretty much achieved this, too. The stylish vehicle is spacious, with a modern cabin, is family-friendly and less bulky looking than the larger XC90. On the road there is an excellent ride, making it a good long distance companion. However, on shorter journeys it is noticeable that the automatic box, which feeds powers to all four wheels, is a little hesitant at times. 

The R-Design gives a sportier chassis, stiffer dampers, anti-roll bars and a colour-matching body kit. 

Volvo’s XC60 was launched in 2008, at the same time as the Audi Q5. The Swedish SUV has arguably helped Volvo shrug off its image as a maker of cars for old men. It has reintroduced the manufacturer to the younger drivers it once appealed to with the cool-looking P1800 - synonymous with TV’s The Saint - in the ‘60s.

Overall, it’s a well-built vehicle suitable for an active family, seeking style and practicality and if Volvo could improve its clever cruise control it would be almost perfect.
