Tips for buying new tyres

If the time has come for you to buy new tyres, you'll find there are a number of things that should be taken into consideration. As well as shopping around for the best deal, you need to make sure you are getting the right tyres for your vehicle.

While you can simply purchase the same make as your current set, it is worth looking around at the different options - this can help you assess what is available and how different models could change your motor's performance.

Among the key points to consider are:

Your vehicle and tyre size

Perhaps the most obvious thing to do before you start shopping for your new car tyres is to look at the specifications of your current set.

On the sidewall, you should discover a series of numbers and letters that will let you know all the tyre information you need - including the tyre and wheel size, load capacity and the maximum speed it can handle.

You may want to opt for tyres with exactly the same specs, but it can be a good idea to look at what different manufacturers offer. You may find that other options are available for your vehicle that could better serve your needs.

Performance needs

Considering exactly how you use your vehicle and what you expect in terms of performance is another important step in the process of selecting new tyres.

For example, there are a variety of specialist tyres available that cater to different types of vehicle, as well as those with various requirements in mind.

If you often carry particularly heavy loads, for example, it is a good idea to check whether the load capacity of your existing tyres is meeting your needs - particularly as additional weight can cause tyres to wear more rapidly if they are not designed to cope with it.

Should you find they do not, it is worth upgrading to a greater load capacity.

Similarly, you should look at what speed your tyres can handle - and whether this aligns with your expectations.

Other things to consider include options such as Run Flat tyres, which allow you to keep on driving for a certain period of time after suffering a puncture or blow out.

Season

Of course, you might not be searching for a new set of tyres because your existing set is worn out. It could be that you're simply looking for a more reliable option for the colder months.

Winter tyres in the UK can be exceptionally worthwhile. Generally speaking, it is recommended that drivers switch to these once the weather drops below seven degrees C - usually between the months of October and March.

Doing so can make a marked difference to your stopping distances, as such tyres offer superior grip on wet, icy and snowy surfaces. Improved braking can make all the difference should you find yourself in a perilous situation on the road.

Quality and getting a good deal

While you're bound to be searching for the best possible deal - something that is well worth taking the time to do - it is also essential to consider quality.

Indeed, while choosing cheaper, lower-quality tyres can seem like a money-saving option, this is in fact often a false economy. High-quality tyres tend to last longer, giving you more miles for the cash you spend compared to lower-quality options.

As a rule of thumb, aim to go for the best tyres within your means - but make sure you choose a retailer that can offer competitive car tyre prices, as well as the option to have them professionally fitted.
